The Old Office That Came Later

晚了二十三年才登场的老县署

A handsome government building can look old enough to have witnessed everything. Taiping’s former District and Land Office was completed in 1897, twenty-three years after the town adopted its current name in 1874. The photograph is a record of that later civic chapter, not a picture of the naming.

太平老县署的外表十分有历史感，容易令人以为它见证了所有往事。其实太平在1874年改用现名，照片中的政府建筑直到1897年才落成，中间隔了二十三年。它属于稍后的行政年代，不是改名当天的现场。

The façade gives us symmetrical openings and a deliberately formal public face. It is easy to admire the composition and forget what an office did: registers, land records, correspondence and the everyday decisions that help a growing district function.

看看整齐排列的门窗、对称的外墙与端正的入口，就能明白当时公共建筑如何表现秩序。不过建筑的立面只说了半个故事。里面还有土地记录、登记册、公函、图纸，以及每天要处理事务的人。这些工作不如火车头上镜，却也深深影响居民生活。

A railway engine makes a more dramatic historical photograph. Office work usually offers less spectacle. Yet boundaries, addresses and records affect ordinary households long after a public ceremony has ended. A town’s history is also made in files and queues.

城市不单靠盛大典礼写成历史。一个地址怎样记录、一块土地的界线如何确定、居民去哪里查询文件，都是城镇慢慢成形的部分。照片里的柱廊也许吸引目光，真正令办公楼繁忙的，往往是看不见的普通工作。

This photograph was taken many years after the building was completed. It should not be described as a scene from 1874 or as an untouched nineteenth-century image. Later alterations and the surrounding town belong to its history too.

还要留意照片的年代。这是建筑落成多年后的影像，不是1874年的照片，更不能把后来的修缮、街景和用途当成十九世纪原貌。老建筑会随城市一起变化，这本身也是值得记下的历史。

If you are walking through old Taiping, look at the building as evidence of a particular period, not a stage set for every story about Larut. The distinction between 1874 and 1897 is small on a timeline and surprisingly large when it comes to getting a caption right.

下次走过太平老城，不妨把1874与1897两个年份分开来想。前者关乎城镇的名称，后者关乎一幢政府办公楼的诞生。时间线上的短短一段距离，却能防止我们把不同年代混成一张模糊的旧照片。

The office did not need to witness Taiping’s naming to deserve a place in Taiping’s story. It simply had a different job to do.

这幢老县署不用亲眼见过改名，也有自己的故事。办公室不常成为旅游主角，偶尔让它站到镜头前，倒也合理。
