A Taiping Shophouse Is Not a Museum
太平老店屋不是博物馆
Walk into the café area of Sojourn Beds & Cafe and the first thing underfoot is a chequered tiled floor. Chairs, tables and a reception counter occupy the room. The photograph accompanying this story is a recent picture of that real interior, not a staged reconstruction of an imagined colonial past.
走进晓客栈的咖啡座，先映入眼帘的是格子地砖、桌椅与接待柜台。这里不是特意搭起来的怀旧摄影棚，而是一处仍然营业、有人办理入住、有人坐下喝东西的空间。本文所用照片摄于近年，只能证明今天室内的样子，不能冒充百年前的现场影像。
Taiping's old commercial streets grew with the town's mining and administrative economy. Research published by the University of Malaya in 2017 examined what gives its shophouses their character. Height and roof forms matter, but the researchers also found that less tangible qualities help residents recognise their town. A living street cannot be reduced to its façade.
太平的商业街随锡矿与行政活動逐渐发展。马来亚大学于2017年发表研究，专门探讨太平店屋的地方特色：楼层比例、屋顶、建筑用料固然重要，居民如何使用、辨认和记住一条街，同样构成它的身份。只看外墙便说“这就是老太平”，其实还少看了里面正在发生的生活。
Outside, the five-foot way, or kaki lima, links shopfronts beneath a sheltered passage. It is a practical response to sun and rain as well as an architectural signature. The Taiping study records its importance to the town's conservation plan. That passage works best when a person with a suitcase can actually walk along it.
店屋外的“五脚基”（kaki lima）把一排店面连成有遮阴的行人通道，既应付烈日与雨水，也形成太平街景的节奏。研究指出，这种连续走廊是应予保存的重要特色。不过，保存不该只剩漂亮的照片；让拖着行李的旅客能安全走过、不必绕到车道上，也是一种实际的尊重。
There is a useful limit to what a photograph can prove. Sojourn's tiles have an appealing pattern, but the image does not establish when they were laid or whether they were original to the building. Calling them 'authentic nineteenth-century tiles' without building records would turn a pleasant detail into an invented fact. The floor deserves better than that.
照片能说的话，有时比导游词少。晓客栈的地砖花纹很耐看，但单凭相片，无法判定它是哪一年铺设，更不能保证每一块都是建屋时留下的。“十九世纪原装地砖”听起来很吸引人，若没有工程记录支持，就只是自己替老屋编故事。欣赏细节，不必给每件东西硬加一个古老年份。
A working shophouse is also a negotiation between uses. The same room may help a traveller orient themselves, a guest check in, and a café visitor sit for a while. One need not pretend that every customer has a romantic heritage experience. Sometimes the achievement is simply that an old building has remained useful enough for people to return.
真正使用中的老店屋，总要容纳不同需要：旅人问路、住客办理入住、咖啡座有人歇脚。这些场景并不戏剧化，也不一定适合拍成“穿越时空”短片。然而一幢旧建筑能持续被使用，而非只留下锁起来的立面，本身就很有价值。老城不只需要保存景色，也需要有人愿意在其中工作与生活。
The pressure is real. A 2005 Universiti Teknologi MARA study of Taiping's shophouse heritage discussed deterioration, demolition and redevelopment pressure. The practical question is not whether the town can freeze itself at a chosen date. It is how older commercial buildings can remain safe, maintained and economically useful without losing the qualities that make them recognisably Taiping.
保育也有现实难题。玛拉工艺大学一份2005年的研究指出，太平店屋面对老化、拆除与重新发展的压力。问题不是把整座城市永远停在某一年，而是如何让建筑安全维修、可以经营、容得下新用途，同时又不抹掉原有街区的特色。只靠给墙壁刷上一层复古颜色，恐怕不能解决所有问题。
For visitors, a sensible heritage walk begins with looking closely rather than collecting as many landmarks as possible. The Taiping Municipal Council provides a town heritage-trail map. Use it as a starting point, check current opening arrangements, keep pedestrian corridors clear, and look both at the buildings and at how the street is used today.
想认识老太平，不必一天内追完所有景点。太平市议会已有市区文化遗产路线图，可以先用它规划短程步行，并另外核对各景点的最新开放安排。沿路不要堵住五脚基，看看墙面和窗户，也看看店家、行人与街道如何相处。若遇上太平惯常的午后雨，慢一点走，往往比赶行程更合理。
A stay in old-town Taiping can be a base for that kind of unhurried visit.
