Before Taiping Wakes
太平醒来之前
The quietest part of a guesthouse day happens before most of the old town has opened its shutters.
旅宿一天里最安静的时刻，往往在老城大部分店门还没打开之前。
At 54 Jalan Kota, some mornings begin with almost nothing happening. The front door is checked, a light comes on, cups are put back where they belong, and somebody leaves early for a bus, a train or a race. Outside, the street is still mostly itself — old shopfronts, a few engines, a little movement. A guesthouse has many versions of morning. The interesting one is often the first: those few quiet minutes when the house is awake, but Taiping is not quite awake yet.
