The Birds Have Not Read the Programme

A calendar can remind us when to look up. It cannot make the birds arrive on time.
日历可以提醒我们什么时候抬头,却不能叫鸟准时出现。
At Taiping Lake Gardens, the easiest thing to miss is often not an attraction. It is a bird that has just landed on a branch while everybody else is walking somewhere. There is no signboard beside it and no QR code to scan. By the time the camera is ready, it may already have decided that another tree is better.
Tourism Malaysia’s 2026 calendar lists Taiping Bird Week for 17 and 18 October, organised by Tourism Perak. A date in a calendar is useful. People remember to bring binoculars, cameras and perhaps a little more patience. Some will come to Taiping because those two dates gave them a reason. The birds, fortunately, have not been told that they are part of the programme.
Birdwatching has one slightly inconvenient lesson for modern travel. To see more, you often have to do less. Stand still. Look at the same tree again. Listen before deciding there is nothing there. We are very good at filling a trip with breakfast, attraction, lunch, attraction and dinner. The empty ten minutes between them rarely makes the itinerary, although that may be exactly when something worth remembering appears.
Taiping suits this slower way of looking. The lake, old trees, wet edges and the forested hill behind town sit close enough that the character of a morning can change within a short distance. You do not have to know every species before noticing that the sound has changed. Not knowing the name of a bird does not prevent you from seeing it. Sometimes the name can come later.
People like to organise nature. We give seasons names, put weekends on posters and build programmes around things that were happening perfectly well without us. That is not a criticism. Without the event, many people may never begin to notice. The useful part comes afterwards, when the poster is gone and somebody walking the same path has acquired the habit of looking up.
Perhaps that is the best outcome of a bird week. Nothing in town needs to become more spectacular. The trees remain trees and the water remains water. The birds continue with whatever they were doing before the calendar noticed them. Only the observer has changed a little.
