The Trees Are Allowed to Lean

树可以慢慢往水边倾

Taiping Lake Gardens is memorable partly because its rain trees seem to have negotiated their own shape with the road and the water.

太平湖滨公园让人记得,部分原因是那些雨树好像自己跟道路和湖水商量出了形状。

The easiest thing to remember about Taiping Lake Gardens may not be the lake at all, but the rain trees leaning towards the water. Their trunks stand beside the road while their branches behave as though straight lines were only a suggestion. From the point of view of a drawing board, they are not especially obedient. From the point of view of a town, they have done rather well.

The ground was once worked for mining before it became a public garden. Walking there now, it is difficult to look at the water, lawns and old trees and imagine an abandoned mining landscape. Time can be more patient than a designer. People dug the ground, then planted, made paths and tended the water’s edge. More than a century later, what remains is simply called scenery.

The rain trees are not simply being left to do whatever they please. Published local information says the council has tagged 113 rain trees and maintains more than 1,300 other trees with help from arborists and experts from the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia. That matters. Things that look natural often depend on a surprising amount of organised work. Somebody checks, somebody trims, and somebody has to decide when the best intervention is no intervention at all.

It is easy to interpret preservation as meaning that nothing should ever be touched. In practice, an old tree that is truly ignored may not grow old gracefully. Old houses are much the same. Things that survive are often not the things sealed away from change, but the things somebody keeps caring for while accepting that they will not retain the exact shape they had on the first day.

Those branches bending over the road and water are naturally photogenic, so they tend to look romantic in pictures. The actual place contains other things too. People jog, people stroll, someone stops to look for monkeys, and someone else simply sits. The trees have arranged no programme for any of them. They have merely grown this far and, as a side effect, provided a little shade.

A new park can put every path, lamp, bench and lawn in its proper place at once. An old park is more troublesome. Over time it departs from the drawing. Trees lean, roots lift the ground and branches reach into spaces that were never reserved for them. Oddly enough, these departures from the plan are often the very parts people become most reluctant to lose.

So there is no need to hurry towards a standard picture-making angle when walking through Taiping Lake Gardens. Looking up at the trees that refuse to stand straight is enough. They probably do not know that they have become one of Taiping’s signatures. A tree simply grows towards light and water. A town, if it is fortunate, learns when to let it continue.
