The Wall Does Not Need Updating
墙壁不需要更新
An old wall has one useful habit. It does not ask for a new version every morning.
老屋的墙有一个好处。它不会每天早上问你要不要换新版本。
An old wall has one advantage. It does not ask every day whether you would like an update. Hang a picture, leave it there, and a few years later it is still the same picture. Perhaps the wooden frame has collected a little dust and the wall has gained a little age. Nobody appears in the corner to announce that a newer version is ready to download.
Most things now are much more hardworking. Phones update. Software updates. News refreshes every few minutes. Even a restaurant menu can change after you scan the same square of black dots. All this is useful, of course. The small side effect is that we also become accustomed to movement. Anything that stays the same for too long begins to look as though it has failed to keep up.
An old house does not pay much attention to this. If a picture looks right on a wall, it can simply stay there. At Sojourn there is a picture with flowers and a cat. It has no animation and no button to press. Its main function is probably just to hang there. That sounds like very little work. It also turns out to be remarkably durable.
Travel can work the same way. In an unfamiliar place it is easy to keep looking for the next attraction, the next shop and the next photograph. The fuller the itinerary becomes, the harder it can be to remember any one part of it. What remains later may be a lamp at a staircase corner, one old floor tile, or a picture on a wall that did not insist on telling you a complete story.
Our time has a strong faith in new things. New is faster, brighter, smarter and usually more expensive. But if an old house replaces everything with the newest version, it may quite quickly stop being an old house. It becomes a newer building decorated to look old. Old does not automatically mean good, but neither does it automatically mean defective. Sometimes something has simply not yet given us a reason to replace it.
The wall, naturally, knows none of this. It merely holds things up. The picture does not explain itself either. A person passing can look for two seconds, look for longer, or walk on. No notification. No countdown. No request for five stars. That sort of quiet has become unexpectedly luxurious.
