The Fire Is Supposed to Be Slow

火本来就应该慢一点

At Kuala Sepetang, charcoal is made by doing something modern life finds surprisingly difficult — waiting.

瓜拉十八丁的木炭,有一部分是靠现代生活最不擅长的一件事做出来的——等。

A charcoal kiln looks like an invention that has refused to become fashionable. There is no screen, no countdown timer and certainly no one-touch mode. Once the wood goes in, almost everything that follows runs against modern instinct. The answer is not simply to make the fire bigger. Heat has to be controlled, reduced and finally shut away so that the kiln can cool at its own pace.

The kilns around Kuala Sepetang make visible a skill that rarely appears in productivity manuals. Knowing when not to interfere. Bernama’s reporting on a local charcoal maker described wood being dried first, then heated for ten days, kept at a lower fire for another fourteen, and finally left sealed to cool for eight more days. The arithmetic is uncomfortable for anyone trained to ask how a process can be cut from a month to three days. But hurry the wrong part and the result may not be efficiency. It may simply be ash.

Travel has acquired the same impatience. Breakfast before one stop, two more pins on the map before lunch, another town by late afternoon. Short distances make us feel that time must not be wasted. By night the phone contains plenty of photographs while the day itself seems to have passed without ever stopping anywhere long enough to become familiar.

Some places around Taiping resist that sort of timetable. Mangroves do. Charcoal kilns certainly do. Stand in front of one of those blackened kiln mouths and it is difficult to imagine that the ordinary lump of charcoal at the end has absorbed so many days of heat, smoke and waiting. The most interesting part of the process is precisely the part nobody can photograph very well — the long stretch in which apparently nothing much is happening.

We praise speed so often that it begins to sound like a moral quality. Cars should be fast, networks should be fast, replies should be fast, and apparently holidays should be fast as well. A charcoal kiln offers a less fashionable idea. Some things are good because nobody successfully rushed them. Fire, left under proper control, gets the job done. People may occasionally work the same way.
