The Photograph Usually Comes Last

照片通常最后才拍

At a guesthouse, the group photograph often happens only when the stay is nearly over.

旅宿里的合照,往往要到住得差不多了才出现。

The group photograph at a guesthouse is often not taken at arrival. At the front door there are bags in people's hands and room numbers, keys, dinner, weather and the very practical thought of sitting down in their heads. The camera can wait. The picture tends to appear later. Bags have been repacked, water bottles filled, somebody takes out a phone, a few people move closer and smile. That is the odd thing about a travel photograph. It looks as if it records a journey, but it really catches only the last few seconds. Most of what felt like travel is missing. Who found the plug first, who forgot an umbrella, who sat downstairs a little longer, who said they would wake early and did not. The camera is honest, but it is also very good at leaving things out. One or two nights become one tidy frame. Luggage disappears. Tiredness briefly disappears. What remains is a small group willing to stand together. Perhaps that is why these photographs are interesting. On arrival, everybody is still occupied with their own route. Before leaving, people often spend another half minute standing a little closer. A guesthouse sees people arrive and leave every day. Rooms are cleaned again, sheets changed again, another set of bags comes through the door. The photograph does not record how long the room was used. It records a moment when people have become familiar enough not to pose too formally. Photographs have another strange talent. Years later, nobody remembers what time check-in was completed or which bed number they had. They may remember the person beside them, or that someone was still looking for a shoe before the picture. Those details had no value at the time, but later they can outlast the itinerary. Travel is usually made to look slightly neater by the camera than it felt in real life. There is nothing wrong with that. Life is untidy enough. Keeping one reasonably tidy picture may be a small kindness the camera does for us.
