Sojourn Note: The Morning After the Trail
Yesterday, Taiping was still counting runners home. This morning, the barriers come down, the crowds thin out, and the old town begins to sound like itself again.
Malaysia Ultra-Trail by UTMB officially ran from 11 to 13 September, with the last MY100 finisher celebration scheduled yesterday morning at Dataran Warisan. For a few days, familiar streets became a start line, a finish line and a meeting place for people from elsewhere.
But Taiping does not need a race to be worth slowing down for. When the banners are gone, there are still the rain trees, kopitiams, old shophouses and that particular Taiping habit of never appearing to be in too much of a hurry.
Perhaps that is the better souvenir: come for an event, but remember the town after the event has gone.
